“We can’t leave yet,” I insisted, sitting on the ground in front of Lupe’s cage as the aggravated bear shifter paced behind me.

Jax sat on my other side, fiddling with my fingers as he nodded thoughtfully in agreement. That was one thing I loved about my vampire mate—no words needed to be said when he was with me. We understood each other in a way that surpassed sentences or conversation, a visceral bond that connected my soul to his.

Dair was crouched down in front of us, his features sad despite the hardening of his eyes. “Ryland said we needed to leave at dark. It’s when he has the most control of the shadows,” he explained.

“But Devlin isn’t here yet. He said…” I swallowed convulsively as a splinter of fear embedded itself in my gut. “He seemed to believe me when I said I was still alive…”

“And he might’ve been too far to make it here on time,” Dair pointed out gently.

The sharp jawline that blessed his golden features clenched, though his irritation wasn’t directed at me. He was just as afraid as I was about Devlin.

We had been waiting on the outskirts of the forest for almost two hours now, and the sun had already been claimed by the horizon. Stars speckled the night sky, though there wasn’t any moon that I could spot. Still, the lighting from above was just bright enough for us to see by.

“Axel knows to keep an eye out for Devlin,” Dair reminded me softly. “But we need to get to the mountain range and find the Alphabet Resistance.”

I considered his words carefully, turning them over and over again in my head before finally concluding that he was right. We needed to find the Alphabet Resistance, discover what they knew, and hopefully, develop a plan of action in this war to come.

“You’re right,” I agreed softly. “I just thought he would be here.”

My heart fractured down the middle at the thought that Devlin didn’t believe me, that he was still on a suicide mission trying to track down Aaliyah. I would feel it if he were dead, just as he felt when I died, but that didn’t mean he was unharmed. Bile burned my throat and tears filled my eyes, though I blinked them away and climbed unsteadily to my feet.

“He’ll be here, Z,” Jax assured me from my other side, his voice a low whisper. “Even if it’s when we return… He’ll be here.”

“How can you be so sure?”

“Because it’s what I would do,” he confessed. The panic trying to crawl its way up my throat was pushed back down when I met his soft green eyes. “It’s what we all would do if we ever got separated from you. We’d find our way back, just like you found your way back to us.”

I pulled in a sharp, staggered breath, suddenly overwhelmed with the irresistible urge to kiss him, to claim his pouty lips with my own. Before I could do that, however, Bash sauntered towards us with a forced grin on his face.
